The Relationship Between Public Relations and Marketing

Public Relations certainly is not marketing. I will say this again and again. Marketing's core purpose is to drive direct sales and revenue in the more immediate sense; public relations is about reputation, credibility, and trust over the long-term.

Public relations also isn't product marketing. In fact, if you try to use public relations solely to market a product - it cheapens your brand, your reputation, and your product. The end result will be that people aren't interested in what you're selling and any credibility or interest is lost.

Public Relations and communications both impact your brand and should have alignment overall with marketing, but, they are their own beasts. They should be meant to complement and not to compete.

If you know, you know - but, if you don't you should listen to the experts in their field. Your reputation and your bottom line depend upon it.
