Taking a bird’s-eye view in communications

Communication is key.

If we all know that communication is key, then why do so many of us not know how to do it effectively, especially in a business setting?

Where does ineffective communication or miscommunication come from? Sometimes we are too caught up in the topic or in the weeds with what we are trying to communicate that we can’t clearly articulate it.

How do we fix this? Take a step back and try to take a bird's-eye view on the subject matter or topic. Put yourself in someone else's shoes who doesn't necessarily have the knowledge or context that you do. Think about the end goal. Too often we miss the actual point and, in the corporate environment, we end up writing a two-dimensional ‘corporate jargon’ communication.
